Radioactive contamination: What to do (Part 1)

Radioactive contamination: What to do (Part 1)

When a disaster of the magnitude of the earthquake and tsunami of Fukushima, Japan, happens, the world is shaken up. Rescuing and hoping for survivors, burying victims, and mourning loved ones are great human tragedies. But when the disaster is topped by multiple nuclear reactor explosions, the world is in panic, wondering how to contain the calamity of the spreading nuclear radiation, which is still emitting from the aging nuclear plants.

The other hysteria is how to protect ourselves from the consequential “plague” of cancer, resulting from radioactive particles disseminated in the atmosphere. It is important that we do not have a repetition of the 1986 Chernobyl catastrophe in Ukraine, part of the then USSR Years later, the affected population in that vicinity is still suffering the aftermath of the nuclear reactor explosion in unpublicized silence.

The Japanese have also had their own experience of nuclear contamination on a much larger scale in World War II, when the Americans dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Both resulted in great human and ecological disasters. Fortunately, times are different, now; news travel faster than “the speed of light,” making us a more informed public!

Since the Japanese are masters at counteracting radioactive contamination, we shall imitate their successful experience. Thanks to the Japanese diet, many of the survivors in the two-bombed cities managed to pull through the nuclear poisoning quite effectively without much of the expected health devastation. The survivors have taught us how to handle nuclear contamination in a natural way and with minimum health damage. Sixty some years later, the world has learned from the man-inflicted calamity.

Having benefited from the earlier Japanese experience, we shall briefly discuss, today, foods and nutrients that detoxify and decontaminate the human body from radioactive chemicals without undermining health. On the contrary, this natural curative regimen that includes minerals, vitamins, and phytochemicals will not only protect against radioactivity, but also invigorate wellness and bolster the immune responses.

The diet and therapy, I am about to propose or more correctly radiation expert scientists strongly recommend, are suggested for populations who came in direct contact or infected through airborne radioactive particles from peaceful nuclear reactors or sophisticated nuclear weaponry like atomic bomb explosions or depleted uranium, resulting from used warring equipment during the recent Gulf and Iraq Wars.

Radioactive rays and chemicals (isotopes) are also utilized for medical purposes; this comes under ‘nuclear medicine.’ They are used for diagnostic purposes or medical treatments. Radiation is used in miniscule amounts that should not inflict too much harm on the patient, unless repeated frequently. The biggest damage results from exposing unborn fetuses to radiation during the first two trimesters, resulting in deformity.

‘Nuclear medicine’ includes radiography, more known as X-rays, to view hard tissue such as bones through ionizing radiation; computerized axial tomography (CT scan), to provide accurate positioning of abnormal tissue in an almost 3-D image; positron emission tomography (PET scan), to produce an exact 3-D image of an organ; radiation therapy, a conventional treatment for cancer tumors; photo-chemotherapy, a very recent approach to specifically target tumors, sparing healthy organs; radioactive iodine injected in tiny amounts to diagnose hyperthyroidism or in larger amounts to waste hyperactive thyroids, not requiring surgical intervention; and injecting radioactive thallium to view the activity of the heart muscle during a stress test.

When one undergoes one of the above tests or treatments, he or she receives a very tiny load of radioactive particles, which are very short-lived, leaving the body within 3 days. Drinking plenty of water or any liquid helps clear radioactive toxins from the system. With radioactive iodine injections, it is advised not to hug or come close to infants, children, and pregnant mothers. According to Dr. Mehmet Oz, who has a television show in the US, thyroid cancer is the fastest spreading cancer in American women. It may be related to the frequent use of dental X-rays and mammograms. When they are required, a shield for the throat should be wrapped around the neck during the procedure for protection from radioactive rays.

Because of the use of such radioactive therapies and chemicals, a cleansing diet is welcome to eliminate toxic residue from the body. The diet will leave behind beneficial side-effects such renewed energy, regenerated cells, nourished bodies, bolstered immune systems, stabilized mood and feeling of wellness.

Today, I shall only summarize the health-protecting foods and supplements that counteract nuclear radiation. In my article next week, I shall elaborate on the detoxifying therapy, as too much information, details and explanations in one single article can be overwhelming and long for the reader.

A radiation protective diet should include sea algae, purified fish and virgin olive oils, fish (sardines, anchovies, mackerel), liver, yeast, chlorophyll rich dark leafy greens (dandelion, wheat and barley grasses), herbal infusions, spices, beans and lentils. Since whole organic foods are important for body hygiene, blood, organs and cleansing systems, their consumption should be emphasized to restore health and energy.

Miso soup with seaweed has been found by Japanese doctors during the Nagasaki bombing to be extremely detoxifying from harmful radiation effects. Miso paste is a Japanese specialty made of fermented soy. Half a teaspoon of miso is mixed with clear soup made with seaweed (garlic and shitake mushrooms are optional detoxifiers). It should be only added after cooking for best results.

Antioxidant rich herbal teas (green tea, chamomile) and extracts nourish and cleanse at the same time. Aloe vera (sibr, sabbar) and Ginko biloba are effective radiation detoxifiers. Supplements should also contain most important multi-minerals (iodine, magnesium, calcium, etc..) and vitamins.

Oral intake of sodium bicarbonate, baking soda from your kitchen, minimizes harmful radioactive effects on the kidneys. For severe cases of nuclear contamination, large quantities of sodium bicarbonate should be taken to safeguard the kidneys from damage. Soaking in seawater baths with baking soda and other minerals (magnesium) does further cleansing.

Due to its bioavailability, potassium iodine is necessary to take for preventing thyroid damage, only if radioactive iodine is among the contaminants; otherwise it is needless to take this very combination. Because the thyroids have an affinity to iodine, radioactive iodine finds no resistance in invading and destroying the tiny glands, especially when iodine is deficient. That is why it is important to keep your body well-supplied with the mineral through consuming seaweed or supplements, fish, seafood and marine salt. Thyroidism has become quite prevalent due to iodine deficiency.

Sodium bicarbonate and iodine in seaweed act as chelators by binding to radioactive particles in the body, neutralizing and flushing them out of the system.

To have good results from any detoxifying diet, you should cut out on refined sugar and carbohydrates, gluten-containing grains (wheat, barley, rye), red and processed meats, fried, fatty and fast foods, saturated and trans fats, processed and pre-prepared foods, sugar-substitutes (aspartame, saccharine), chemical additives (preservatives, artificial colorings and flavors), smoking and alcohol. The DON’TS are just as important as the DOS.

The situation in Japan is neither settled nor reassuring; it would take a lot more than months to decontaminate the area. The Japanese are simultaneously suffering a natural disaster as well as a man-made calamity. The farmers are already feeling the pinch; they have to waste their produce due to contamination. As if the explosions of the nuclear reactors are not sufficient; rain mixed with suspended radioactive particles resulted in highly contaminated rainwater coming in contact with the vegetation, making it dangerous for human and animal consumption. The latest news point to low-level contamination in Massachusetts’ rainwater, resulting from the Fukushima nuclear meltdown. We all hope and sincerely pray that the damage gets contained with minimum possible suffering to innocent civilians and harm to the environment.

Fortunately, the Saudi government has taken swift action, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Saudi Food and Drug Authority have ordered a thorough check on goods and medicines, coming from Japan, for radioactive traces in order to prevent nuclear contamination. Precautions are necessary to protect the population.

Meanwhile, each one of us has to become aware and proactive to protect health: Safeguard our ecosystems, environments and climate as well as defend the safety of our Earth.

I shall come back next week, inshallah, with details on an effective detoxifying diet on radioactive contamination. It will come along with many health benefits.
