Victorian trial to study how herb brahmi can lower hyperactivity in children

A HERB, brahmi, used in Hindu medicine could help lower hyperactivity in children.

A new Victorian trial will investigate the effects of the plant extract on hyperactivity, inattention and impulsivity in boys with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Swinburne University of Technology PhD candidate James Kean said Bacopa monnieri had been used for memory and inflammation in traditional Hindu Ayurvedic medicine for 3000 years.

Study participants aged 6-14 will sit tests measuring their IQ, memory, attention, reaction time, inhibition and behaviour.

Over 16 weeks, they will be given the herbal extract CDRI 08, sold as Keenmind, and parents will monitor their children’s behaviour. Soho Flordis International, which sells the capsules, has provided funds.

Professor Con Stough, from Swinburne’s Centre for Human Psychopharmacology, said studies had shown that taking the extract improved antioxidant defence, changed inflammatory markers, and had effects on the brain that could improve memory and concentration.
