Gardenia jasminoides shows protective effects against cognitive impairment

A study, published in The American Journal of Chinese Medicine, evaluated the effects of gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides) on learning and memory. The researchers carried out in vivo studies to determine whether the plant could work for a healthy brain function. According to the respective research, extracts from gardenia can potentially prevent neurotoxicity and cognitive impairment.

People are often dreaded by the idea of losing memories and losing them to neurodegenerative disease makes it worse, even unbearable. There are lists of studies that have been done to investigate these kinds of diseases. However, their exact causes are still not fully explained.

As a person ages, the health conditions that impair cognitive function pose a greater risk of their likelihood. Scientists are putting continuous efforts looking for ways to reduce and even reverse the symptoms of these diseases. This study brings another natural compound that could serve the purpose.

Alzheimer’s is one of the most popular cognitive diseases which impairs memory. Some of the recognized key drivers of Alzheimer’s disease include,

  • Cholinergic (nerve cells) dysfunction
  • Mitochondrial damage
  • Oxidative stress
  • Inflammation of the central nervous system (neuroinflammation)

The researchers of the study employed amyloid-beta-induced animal models for the study. They looked at the Chinese herbs, which have been used medicinally for thousands of years, as a good source for potential drugs for Alzheimer’s. The research team focused on gardenia fruit i.e. a common Chinese herbal medicine. The fruit was investigated for its protective effects against cognitive impairment and neurotoxicity in the test subjects.

What did the researchers find?

Gardenia fruit was revealed to possess tranquilizing effects on the cognitive functioning of the subjects.  The researchers extracted an important component of widely used traditional Chinese medicine for dementia. The component is named as “crocin (GJ-4)” and is a carotenoid found in G. jasminoides.

The compound was investigated for its neuroprotective ability in mice injected with amyloid-beta 25-35. It was found that GJ-4 enhanced the memory and cognitive ability of the injected mice. The protective effects of GJ-4 targeted neurons and cholinergic dysfunction. Furthermore, it improved antioxidant capacity and reduce neuro-inflammation significantly.

Thus, it was concluded that gardenia fruit can provide protection against cognitive injuries and could be a promising source of treatments for improving cognitive and memory injury.

Other health benefits of Gardenia

Apart from cognitive protection gardenia, in particular gardenia essential oil, comes with various health benefits. Its essential oil is very well known for its healing properties. Here are some significant health benefits of gardenia essential oil,
