ANNE SHOOTER SAVVY SHOPPER: The Chinese leaf slimmers swear by

White mulberry leaf contains a compound that inhibits the enzymes which digest carbohydrates, keeping blood sugar levels stable

There’s a new superfood around — and this time it could help you lose weight and even prevent diabetes.

White mulberry leaf, which has been used in Chinese and Indian ayurvedic medicine for centuries, contains a compound that inhibits the enzymes which digest carbohydrates, keeping blood sugar levels stable.

The leaf can now be bought in powdered form, as Minvita Mulberry Superfood Powder from branches of Holland and Barrett and selected Boots stores nationwide, for £19.99 for a large 250g tub.

Dr Sarah Brewer, a GP and medical nutritionist, says: ‘We know how mulberry leaf powder works — it has been shown to be effective in reducing blood sugar spikes, plus it’s safe and also has a high antioxidant content, which can protect cells from free radical damage, so it has added health benefits, too.

‘This may help some people with pre-diabetes avoid going on to develop diabetes and, by reducing sugar cravings, may potentially help with weight loss.

‘And for people with Type 2 diabetes, mulberry leaf extract may offer some protection against diabetes-associated complications caused when raised levels of blood glucose damage proteins in artery linings and vital organs. It’s this damage that increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, sight loss, nerve damage, limb amputation and kidney failure.

‘Mulberry leaf powder is potentially of great benefit for people with pre-diabetes and those with diabetes who are controlling their blood sugar with diet alone.’

Research by scientists in South Korea at Ewha Women’s University and Seoul National University of Science and Technology, which was published in the Journal of Functional Foods, found that 50 healthy people given mulberry leaf extract before drinking a maltose (sugar) solution had lower blood glucose levels, compared with those given a placebo drink.

A dessertspoon (5g) of the green powder can be taken daily.
