Natural remedy to help in nasal allergy problems

For those suffering from allergic rhinitis and sinusitis, there’s a natural remedy to help them with their symptoms.

Allergic rhinitis or nasal allergies are one of the most common forms of allergies, with sinusitis being a prominent and debilitating feature.

The three cardinal symptoms of allergic rhinitis or nasal allergies are sneezing, nasal blockage and mucous discharge.

Doctors often refer to sinusitis as rhinosinusitis, because inflammation of the sinuses (pockets of air in the cavities of the face) nearly always occurs simultaneously with inflammation of the nose (rhinitis).

As allergy-prone noses become inflamed and blocked, sinusitis can develop as the sinus cavities in the face fills up with mucous.

To complicate matters, viral or bacterial infections can set in, worsening existing symptoms.

Those with sinusitis often experience difficulty breathing, facial congestion, pain, headaches, ear aches and problems with sleep.

Young sufferers (including school-going children) may also experience learning difficulties and anxiety, besides behaviour and attention disorders, as the nasal congestion and sinusitis disrupt sleep.

Researchers have established that the nose and lungs in fact belong to “one airway”. Inflammatory processes occuring in the nose, if left untreated, can eventually affect the lungs.

Searching for relief

Allergies tend to run in families, although approximately 23% of individuals without any familial disposition also develop allergies.

Patients with nasal allergies struggle to alleviate their misery, frequently self-adjusting their treatment regimen of over-the-counter and prescription medications because of lack of efficacy, deterioration of efficacy, lack of relief and bothersome side effects.

The majority of treatment options available target the relief of allergy symptoms. Medications such as antihistamines and nasal steroid sprays are commonly used.

More recently, leukotriene inhibitors such as montelukast have proved popular where it has even been described as a “lung vitamin”.

Nevertheless, both prescribers and patients should be aware of neuropsychiatric adverse reactions linked to the use of montelukast.

Although drug treatment has been helpful in managing allergies, these drugs are not able to prevent an allergic reaction from happening, nor are they able to address the root cause of an oversensitive immune system.

Natural therapies research

Researchers at the Ruder Boskovic Institute located in Zagreb, Croatia, have discovered an alternative way of dealing with allergic rhinitis and sinusitis. They conducted research on an activated astragalus root extract and found that it possessed immune-modulating actions useful in controlling allergies.

The result of this research was published in the journal Phytotherapy Research in 2010.

Dr Silva Pecanic, one of the principal researchers of this study who was in Malaysia recently, shared that treatment with the extract resulted in an overall improvement of allergic rhinitis by over 70% after six weeks of treatment. Different from any other therapy, the extract takes aim specifically at the imbalances of the immune system which trigger allergy symptoms.

“Our studies have found that it is possible to support our immune systems to mature and even ‘learn’. As the extract helps to ‘teach’ our immune system how to differentiate between what is harmful and what is not, a calmer, non-reactive system can be established,” she noted.

The extract is actually made up of two main components – a patented astragalus extract complemented with a special calcium mineral carrier technology which helps enhance absorption for optimal results.

The research on the extract is compelling as it addresses a root pathway that helps prevent the onset of allergies, with the potential to interfere with the natural course of the disease.
