Food Hospital - Tyramine Diet

This diet is aimed at people who are sensitive to tyramine, a naturally occurring substance found in plants and animals, often produced when food ferments or decays.

Foods that are typically high in tyramine include those that are preserved through smoking, marinating, pickling, curing, fermenting or aging. Typically, the longer a high protein food is aged or stored, the higher its tyramine content. High tyramine foods include several cheeses, chocolate, cured or processed meats, yeast extract, soya products and alcoholic drinks. Some fruits and vegetables are also high in tyramine including avocados, several varieties of beans and nuts, bananas, plums and pineapple.

For those who are sensitive, consuming tyramine can cause the release of certain chemicals into the body that can cause hypertension, raising blood pressure, increasing heart rate and causing headaches or nausea. In some cases this reaction can be severe leading to dangerously high blood pressure. Tyramine has also been linked to migraines in certain studies.
