10 anti-aging Chinese herbs to make your skin look younger: TCM

Chinese wolfberry fruit is named in the top 10 anti-aging Chinese herbs

Like an ancient tribe, this country has confidence in the food therapies found in the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) cabinet - whatever your condition, it's due to your food, ailments and health alike.

And, yes, beauty matters too. People can and should trust certain herbs for anti-aging purposes, say TCM practitioners, for good reason. Here are some, and here is why.

1) Chinese wolfberry fruit

It's a plant growing in a frigid environment and thus has the capacity to strengthen the body and prolong the aging process, according to Sheng Nong's Herbal Classic. Similar to ginseng, the plant helps lower high blood pressure and promotes the regeneration of liver cells.

2) Ginseng

To back up the overflowing praise for the plant in Sheng Nong's Herbal Classic, modern studies have confirmed the anti-aging magic that ginseng can bring to beauty- seekers. According to Huo Yushu, a researcher from the TCM center in northeast China's Jilin Province, the herb performs the function of all antioxidants, such as countering fatigue and regenerating the blood.

3) Royal jelly

For thousands of years, Chinese women have relied on royal jelly for silky-smooth skin. It promotes cell-regeneration, protein synthesis and the human metabolism in general. What's more, it contains a considerable amount of the superoxide dismutase (SOD.)

4) Mile vetch root

Chi is vital to maintaining the glow of youth. An abundance of Chi keeps energy high and fends off a sluggish appearance, through the protection of the spleen. This is an easy task for milevetch root, if used on a long term basis of course.

5) Sanqi

Sanqi (pseudo-ginseng), also called Tianqi, is a very precious member of the TCM repertoire, grown in Southeast China's kingdom of herbs, Yunnan Province. It has been used for hundreds of years to improve the overall health of the human body by adjusting internal balance.

Modern studies have confirmed the obvious curative effects of Sanqi on cardiovascular and immune-deficiencies, and all diseases rooted in inflammation. It helps normalize blood lipids and blood pressure as well. Sanqi is now available in tonic form.

6) Heshouwu (Chinese knotweed)

Known as Heshouwu in the countryside, this is a species of fallopian plant native to central and southern China. It's commonly used in Chinese medicine for its MAOI content and for its yield of dimethyltryptamine (DMT), an hallucinogen which in high doses plays a major role in the visionary activity of dreams, near-death experiences and other mystical states, but which was traditionally and sparingly used to sooth the nerves of the highly strung.

7) Glossy ganoderma (lingzhi)

It's said to be a magical potion, thanks to its tranquilizing function. Though the legend that ingestion of lingzhi on a daily basis makes you immortal sounds a little unreliable to say the least, modern medical studies attest the herb does help delay the aging process by balancing the metabolism.

8) Rhodiola rosea

Recently discovered, this anti-aging tonic has a similar function to ginseng. The anti-inflammatory detoxifies internal organs and helps to ease intense cases of nerves; plus it has other good effects on cardiovascular dysfunction and immunodeficiency.

9) Gynostemma

Inducted into the anti-aging herbal army relatively recently, this plant, common to South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, started to catch on in Japan after a scientist in that neighboring country discovered its magical ability to prevent cancer and boost immunity functions.

10) Slender acanthopanax

It's recommended by the Compendium of Materia Medica as the natural Red Bull minus the side effect of increased heart rate. And the plus to all its anti-aging functions? The herb is also known as the natural Viagra!
